I have done three signings for them. The first two were paid fairly promptly, but need to follow up on the third one from July.

Sometimes you want to take the job, and don't have the chance to "check them out". Most times I decline strangers who will not prepay to my PayPal account. If the ones that "sound OK" can't be verified here, on rotary or via the BBB; they get a "pay now" phone call. My "default" is to NOT trust, Mom taught me "trust has to be earned".

If I find some really bad stuff about them; they get a screen print emailed with a half hour window to pay or they can consider my obligation to their project revoked.

Good Point.

I ask that question everyday. In this case, we acted to help the family that was going to lose the refi they had waited on for months. They had to leave the US to preserve their Visa status and had paid for the tickets.

Also we were promised payment at funding and a check by FedEx. They said they were a title company. Hard lesson learned... AGAIN.

Thanks.

Claims to be a title company but acts like a signing agency. Does not list notary on HUD1 and does NOT remit at funding like title companies but holds notary funds like a signing agency.

When challenged after not receiving payment timely they used the following excuses in order:

1) Sent check to another firm with same name in same state... opps
2) Claimed they were a long time customer of ours when in fact is was the first event and of course a "last minute emergency closing". (In fact, we saved the deal as the signors were literally headed to the airport to catch a flight out of the country.)
3) Admitted they do not remit at settlement because they do not list notary or notary firm on HUD1 (they are not the title firm after all)
4) Did not want to pay electronically or by Credit Card but insists on mailing checks that just never show up.

Finally, they claim business is down 60% and said they would not use us anymore because we complained about not being paid timely. WHAT!
Who of us does not remember a time where business was NOT down? Is that a reason not to pay the notary?

Why is it we notaries are so important at closing but so forgotten after we drop the docs with FedEX?

Ask yourself why you "fund" strangers like a bank? Getting paid prior to service is the norm for internet sales of both goods and services.
Of course there are exceptions of those known to be worthy of your trust or having an A+ BBB rating. But, for unknown, unrated, I wonder why you extend credit to them?

Pay is lower than most for eDocs, they will notary shop to get the cheapest notary and then call you back to cancel.

YES; one closing; everything on time, no annoying calls and faxes; prompt payment--they pay when the deal funds.
Give them high marks, Jeremy, and tell people to take all the business they offer.
