Find out what time the daytime notaries close for the day (banks, credit unions, UPS stores, other storefront notaries). If they close at 6 pm, I would stay open after 6 pm. Find out what time they close on Saturday. Be open when they are closed. These storefront places are closed on Sundays, so you could also offer notary service on Sunday, if you choose. You can charge an extra fee for Sunday.
Most calls are not for rush service, so it works best to set an appt so you can plan your schedule. Some hospital calls may be for rush service, you can charge an extra fee for rush service. Hospital calls are often for same day or next day service. Family members may be visiting from out of town and need to sign or witness some documents before they leave town.
I think a website is needed. Many people do a Google search for "mobile notary in CityName". You can put your photo and some background info on your website so they can "check you out" before they call you. They can pay me by cash or check on site or they can pay on my website using a credit card with PayPal. I also use PayPal to generate invoices for business accounts.
For repeat business, you want to build relationships with referral sources. Ask where you can leave a stack of business cards at the hospital, nursing home or senior center.
If you're near a Microsoft or Boeing location, or other big employer, contact the HR department and ask if they would be interested in having Notary Day at work. The company could make announcements to employees that a certain day each month/quarter is Notary Day.
If employees have docs to notarize, they can bring them to work on Notary Day. You can sit at a table in the cafeteria or break room with a Notary sign, and the customers come to you. It is a convenience to the employees, since they don't have to leave work or drive around town to find a notary. It may also help the employer, by adding a convenient service at no cost, and may eliminate some long lunch hours where employees are driving to notaries on their lunch break. |

Thank you Notary007 that is helpful. Because I have a day job, I was thinking about offering services after 7 pm and on the weekends, but just wanted to get the opinions of others before I re-started.
Also, do you primarily operate off of appointments or do you respond within so many minutes after receiving a call for your services? |

I provide mobile notary services to the general public, hospitals and nursing homes. I charge higher fees for evenings, weekends, holidays, night owl service, etc. For the general public, I often meet at a nearby Starbucks or McDonalds. Set a minimum travel fee (as allowed by your state laws) to make it worth your time.
I charge more for hospital calls since they take more time, parking in the parking garage, walking to the entrance, taking the elevator, dealing with patient issues, chatting with visiting family members, etc.
But the customers are thankful for the mobile service. Sometimes they want to pay me more than my fee schedule, as a tip. But beware of charging more than allowed by law. If they want to pay extra, consider giving them a gift certificate or coupon for the extra amount, good toward future notary services.
Times of calls vary. If I'm not available, or the distance is too far, I refer the job to another notary and vice versa.
Also, banks may turn away certain types of transactions or documents. Ask them to please refer the declined notary business to you.
Before working with any signing service, check out their reputation and payment record. If you need a laser printer, there are used and refurbished ones for sale on eBay. I would not attempt loan signings until you have taken a training course or unless you already have experience with real estate loan docs.

Hello. I've been a notary for several years, but not very active. Recently, I've thought about starting up again in order to bring in some extra income and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a few questions?
Firstly, there are a ton of banks and other notary services available during the daylight hours and I'm wondering if anyone has found it profitable to offer early evening and nighttime services? If so, what is the time span where you see the most business and from whom?
Secondly, a long time ago, I found a loan signing agency online that was looking for notaries. They required that you have a laser jet printer to get started. Does anyone know of a credible agency like this where I can get started?
Thank you. |
