I once had to go back and re-notarize for someone because his documents ended up not being acceptable to the party he sent them to (he drew them up himself). I told the guy on the phone that it would be another trip fee and another per-notarization fee.
You can call your person back and tell them you want to clarify your fees before you make the trip - they can then decide whether to proceed or to cancel with you.
Another re-do comes to mind that happened a few years ago. It was a Deed of Trust for a CA property, but it was a private appointment just for that document and not a loan signing appointment. At that time, VA notary law required that the notary certificate must be on the same page as the signer's signature. Since the notary certificate was on a separate page of this document, I stamped my VA ack stamp onto the signature page and notarized it. The signer sent the document off to their CA title company, but the next day I received a call from the signer saying that it was rejected by the CA recorder's office. I suspected that was not true - I suspected that the TC just *thought* it might not record (seems to be a common misperception in the CA title industry that CA recorders will ONLY accept CA ack wording even if the document is notarized out of state - it's true that if notarized in CA they will only accept CA ack wording, but for out of state notarizations they will accept the wording for the state in which it was notarized). They sent the signer a new document with the notary certificate on the same page as the signer's signature, and I re-did that one at no charge. It was not my fault and the original notarization was absolutely proper and valid, and I bet that it would have been accepted if actually presented for recording, but since there was a perception that there was a problem with my notarization, I re-did it at no additional charge, as a courtesy. Thankfully that situation only happened once.

I have to go back an re-notarize some documents in which a person's name was not correct. This is of no fault of my own. These are personal documents, not from a signer. I want to charge BUT I'm not sure how to approach it and not sure if she thinks I'm going to do this for free.
How would you handle this? |
