You have to market yourself or no one is going to hire you. Just because you pass a test( CA in particular) doesn't mean anyone will give you a notary/loan signing assignment.

Sign up with 100's of company, get a website, business cards, contact local companies and do great error free work.

In due time if you do what you are supposed to do, I would imagine you would get repeat business. However do your research to find out what works best for your area.

Well said Kelly,

If we do accordingly, then competition can't become a hurdle for our business. Competition is everywhere and no margin of error in cutthroat business.

I like alot of the other signers have been in the business for quite some time. Chances are you will not have 3 signings everyday. The last week of the month you may get 3-4 a day, but, it is tough to get 3 everyday. Teh business is slow and there is alot of competition out there also. Good luck to you.

Clain22,

You have enlisted several organizations who are advertising for you. Online membership is great but you want to get involved more locally if you plan to do business in your state or community.

Marketing can be scary if you do not know how. Create a magnetic business card that is attractive and would be worthy of sticking on someone's refridgerator. You may be surprised at how many people will actually look at that card. I certainly have seen my share of them on a refridgerator. Make an unmagnetized version of that same card convenient for someone's wallet or purse. You can place them on community bulletin boards as well. Many local restaurants and stores have bulletin boards specifically for that purpose.

The Chamber of Commerce is a great association to involve yourself with. This is an opportunity to meet other business owners in your community and get tips that can help you along. Becoming a member of the Better Business Bureau can also be advantageous. Being able to say to someone that you are a member of the BBB can build up your reputation as a credible business person.

More importantly, and I strongly recommend it, is to compose a Business Plan that you can refer to when things do not go as you anticipated. To see what one looks like you can go the the Small Business Association's website at http://www.sba.gov/. I think they may even have a template you can use.

I usually average around 15 a week but I have been doing this for 13+ years. The others are spot on. Have a good website that is the top of search in your area and sign up for all the free directories you can paying only for the three listed in this thread. Put a LINK back to your site on all free directories including any Google/yahoo directories etc. It just takes time and persistence.

I have been also looking to increase my business and what I can tell you what I've done is sign up for as much free advertising as possible. This means yelp.com, yellowpages.com, yahoo listings, Google local places, notary rotary, notary cafe, and of course 123notary.

What's been suggested to me and I would suggest to you is start out with free listings at first, making sure to ask your customers how they found you. Then based on that info, make the decision to upgrade to a paid listings.

In my situation the nearly 90% of my notary/loan signing work has a result of my posting on 123notary from signing companies that regularly review the listings and individuals that found it through Google (my posting is usually on the first page, something I can't say for my own website). That said I went ahead and paid for a top listing as I feel it's going to be my strongest source of advertising and actually worth investing in.

CopperheadVA's right though. Business is very slow right now. First month as my own full-time notary service I received only two phone calls. Next month was the same. July was my best month so far with 10 notarizations/loan signings in one work week. I thought things had finally turned around for me but the following two weeks after things died again. Yet, with August just starting I've already had two signings which is unheard of for me (most of my signings come in the 2nd half of the month) so hoping this means it will be a good month, but as you can see its all over the place.

I have been doing loan signings full time since 2005 and I have never consistently had 3 signings per day, every day, every week (which translates to 15 per week and 60 per month). This business is very slow right now - some people are getting only three signings per month. Also, this business ebbs and flows - you may have a busy week and then absolutely nothing the next week.
