I must say I admire your tenacity to complete the assignment. Personally, if the items you mention would be required - there is absolutely no way I would enter or remain on the premises.

Not a chance.

once again I agree with Edelske. Next time this happens I will leave, its not life threatening and they dont care about anything they just dont want anything errors regardless.
I do take my shoes off when its a cultural thing like with many Asians and I am used to the customs being from San Francisco. Whenever I have a house that smells so bad in the future that I am nearly gagging, I will just tell them it smells too bad for me to stay and then leave. I have had to put Tiger Balm and other strong nice smelling stuff under my nostrils to be able to get through an appt before but NO MORE. Some hoarders and filthy people need to be told straight up that their place smells so bad its enough to gag a maggot.

I did one of these too. I was so surprised. The house was in a beautiful Orange County gated community. The exterior was neatly manicured landscaping and very nicely kept. Once inside, I was able to step inside 3 feet to a T.V. tray set up in the entry with 2 folding chairs where we signed. The rest of the house was wall to wall over 9' high of boxes, papers and other belongings and what looked like maze entrances heading in 3 directions...1 to the kitchen, 1 to the "office" and 1 to the bedroom...even half the width of the stairway was stacked with stuff on each and every step...really weird!

"Sign standing up", "Sign on the wall" ????

Not for me. I require a well lit table to work upon. Those heroic efforts will not be appreciated when title/escrow/LO, etc., finds the slightest flaw or missing initials/signature/date.

I understand the desire to accommodate and adapt to the situation. However, I require a certain minimum level of environmental accommodation for me to perform my function.

I too have had the situations described in this post. Firmly, but politely insisting upon a proper environment usually works. If the home has no suitable facility; I suggest we adjourn to a Starbucks, or local cafe. I explain that I am the one responsible for the proper completion of the documents - and that not being able to properly see or handle them - makes my function prone to errors and omissions.

THEY want the documents completed properly - and either produce a table and lamp; or agree to meeting at a new location.

Of course if it's just a very few pages - I can "rough it". But not for a 100 page set of loan docs. The person paying me will not be at all interested in the "signing environment" - only the paperwork.

I know, battlefield surgery, in wartime, has been conducted in semi darkness with the mud flying into the open wound. But, our work is rarely "life critical" and as professionals we can insist on a proper working environment - or - just decline to proceed.

I, too, have signed loans in houses of hoarders. One thing I found is that each hoarder seemed to have a workable path. I personally do not have a problem with hoarders. As a matter of fact, once I earn my law degree I plan to specialize in animal law and disability law which includes hoarders. I have learned that many of them are extremely intelligent but have experienced some kind of trauma that caused the problem to exist.

My concern with going into the home of a hoarder is health safety. Unfortunately for me, I signed a loan in the home of an animal hoarder and contracted a contagious rash in a place that was not easily accessible to scratch. I have since learned to go fully prepared with a clean change of clothes, some antibacterial lotion like you see in hospitals, dry shampoo, and other items which may be necessary to maintain good health.

The same can apply to homes of chronic smokers. Oftentimes, I would go from one signing to another where the next borrower is allegic to cigarettes(as I am). The last thing you want to do is to go on to your next signing smelling like a smoke shop or even carrying some kind of contagious infection.

Please be health conscious and look after your borrower. They will appreciate it.

yes I ve been to hoarders homes before to sign. Had to sign on the entry hall wall-no available surfaces or walking areas. Whats even worse is when there is no address posted anywhere on curb, house or mailbox, and they gleefully ask you if you had any trouble finding the house!! Well you moron, no, being pitch black out, and no numbers. I actually have had this happen.

I went to a house...just an ordinary house on an ordinary day. Once inside, I thought I would faint! It looked like one of those "hoarder-houses" that you see on tv. The stuff was piled in every direction up to the ceiling! There was a small tiny path in which you had to turn sideways to get to the back of the house where the kitchen was, and where the closing was to take place. We had to stand up in the kitchen as there was no room on the table to sign docs. One of the borrowers was a teacher and the other a psyciatrist! OMG! And she told me right before I left, that she had spent all day cleaning,in anticipation of my visit!
