As I headed to another signing, the clouds were rolling in; the sky was getting darker and darker. It was only 3:00 pm and it was nearly dark. The thunder and lightening started. I arrived right on time at the borrower’s home.
I opened my car door, rain came pouring down. It was kind of spooky. I headed to the front door. I rang the door bell, I waited, I rang the door bell again, and waited. Finally a man appeared. I asked him if my borrower was home. He started raving that he didn’t know where she was, or when she would be home, he said, “That she never tells him where she is going or what she’s doing. He said, “She does her thing; I do mine. The thunder and lightening got louder.
I told him that I had an appointment with her for 3:00 pm. He didn’t know where she was; or when she would be home. I asked him if he had a number I could reach her at. He said, “Just have a seat here on the porch; I will look up her number in my truck”. He headed to his truck; as he went around the garage to get to his truck, I couldn’t see him.
As he disappeared, the front door started opening very slowly; making a squeaking noise. No one appeared, and then the door was slowly closed, making that same squeaking noise. I thought to myself something’s wrong.
Again, the front door opened very slowly, this time a little old lady was looking at me from behind the door, her face was all I could see. I said “Hello,” and she said, “Are you looking for the lady that lives here?” I responded, “Yes, I am.” In a very quiet voice she said, “She left a long, long time ago, I don’t know where she is, but I am really afraid. I don’t know when she will be home.” She closed the door ever so slowly and disappeared behind the door.
I knew I needed to get out of here, I thought, “Should I call for help? I got my briefcase and headed for my car. As I started to get in my car, it was still pouring rain. The man appeared, he said, “I thought you wanted her number?” I got into my car. I had already dialed my phone, calling the signing service. I asked them to stay on the line until I got out of there.
He approached my car; I put the window down just enough to get the card from him. I pulled out of the driveway; and drove off. I told the signing service what had happened. I told them that I feared for this little old lady.
They told me to just leave as quickly as I could. They instructed me to call the borrower on her cell phone. So I did. She was a very rude woman. I asked her if she was in the area; could we meet somewhere to sign her loan documents. I didn’t mention to her what had happened; I merely told her I had come by for our scheduled time and found she wasn’t home. I told her the man that answered the door gave me her card. She insisted that she thought this was being done with her loan officer; and why was I calling her. I explained that I was a Certified Notary Signing Agent and was given this signing. I again asked if we could meet. She said, “She was going to call her loan officer; that she would not meet with me until the next day. I told the borrower I would call her the next morning and we could meet at a place of her choice. She told me okay; and I headed back to the interstate, knowing I would feel better once I got out of this terrible storm.
I called my company back, telling them I had spoken to the borrower, and she refused to sign that day, but she said she would sign the next day. I was asked to be sure to call her the next day. The next day came, I was nervous about this, however, I told the company I would call her, so I called the borrower. The borrower said she would not sign anything with me. She said she was going to her loan officer’s office; she would sign what needed to be signed there. She told me not to call her again.
At that point, I felt relieved that I did not have to meet with her. I don’t know what the situation was in her home. For days I thought of the little old lady; and hoped everyday that she was okay. I told myself I would never know.
I tell my notaries always to be alert and be safe; and to get out as quickly as possible if something seems unusual. I had no idea what was going on, nor did I want to know.
