I just bought a back up HP 4100 on ebay for $65. It only has 1 tray but I have 2 others that have 2 trays. I absolutely love the HP printers, especially the 4100 series. Truly workhorses. |

It's also important to add memory to your printer. It can be a small chunk of change for the extra memory, but it will save your sanity and print docs much faster, since we deal with such large files.

The printer also needs to be PCL5 or PCL6 compatible. I'm not technically inclined so I can't tell you why that's important, but I know it has something to do with printing the documents correctly. The lower end printers might not be PCL 5 or 6 compatible, so check that before making your choice. |

Monochrome black laser, dual tray, automatic duplexing (although I've not had a lot of use for it)...I'd go at least over 20 pages/minute - the faster the better but they get pricey; check the monthly duty cycle -that's the number of printed pages it's recommended that printer make for maximum efficiency - if you go over it the printer may not hold up to it
Most printers have a counter - you can see how many pages it's already printed - watch for that...you don't want high page count if you can help it...the higher the page count the more use that machine has had
Technically..I'm not good at that so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will log in and help..
Good Luck.

Linda, thanks for the response. Can you be more specific as to what to look for. I know I need a dual tray in order to print legal and letter size. What else should I look for? |

I would suggest you go to e-bay and shop there for a laser printer - you can limit your search to what you want it to do and the speed you want.
I'm partial to HP but also have a Brother MFC that works well. I will say that if you're going to run a business, and in particular do loan signings, don't skimp on the printer too much- it's one of your most essential tools.
Good Luck.

I would love some suggestions on a good basic starter printer. Nothing fancy right now. Just something that gets the job done that is affordable for someone on a budget. Thank you in advance. |
