That’s for sure that the economic crises affected the notary business. As other notaries, I am also involved in the general notary work and most of the income comes from the travel fees, since $10/signature won’t make you a living…However, lately people became more alert and savvy in terms of paying for mobile fees. Everyone is cutting down on expenses and costs. So, latterly I noticed that people would rather come to my home office instead, and save on the travel cost…

Loan signing has slowed down in general, however, that being said, there is still work for EXCELLENT notaries. Title companies and signing companies alike have stopped sending work to notaries that are lazy, careless and who don't promptly return loan packages, and rightfully so. Companies want the cream of the crop, and are not afraid to pay what you ask, as long as you back up that fee with flawless service. That means no careless mistakes. There are still notaries going on signings looking like slobs, they don't arrive on time, they never check their work, and won't check their e-doc packages to see if anything might be missing (maybe a HUD), and can't even vaguely explain the documents. If you're not willing to WORK for your fee, and you don't know what you're doing, then you won't be getting much signing business. If you are flawless in your work, with a lot of attention to detail, and you actually KNOW what you are doing with the loan docs, and are a good communicator, you'll get work, and I don't mean $40 signings.

General notary work can be a game changer for many of you. Signing will get better but will never be what they were for us in the past. However, for those of you that have no restrictions on travel fees that you can charge then by all means get out there and do some leg work handing out those cards. Folks never know when they just might need a traveling notary.

I agree with Lisa. Most of money income is not from loan signings any more, but with general notary work and other services that I offer.

Obviously, loan signings are down, but I do three times the general notary work than loan signings so I make good money during the week. I know that's not feasible for some notaries as their state notarization fee can be as little as 50 cents per notarizations so they make money in loan signings.

The bad economic situation has effected all of our businesses and we are lucky to have businesses the way things are going. 123notary has to work extra hard to maintain our customer base, and many have trouble paying their membership fees. Growth is out of the question, but staying afloat is a practical goal. Many notaries are not getting as much business as they did in 2005-2006. I am sure that things will pick up and the real estate market will go up which will save our industry. Lets share our experiences.
