Get paid! If you have completed a job, and its been 45 or more days and you still haven't been paid, what do you do? First, make sure you have a copy of the work order.
Keep track of who owes you what. Keep a computer or paper file of which company assigned what job on what date. Keep track of the borrower's name, date of the signing, and the loan number. Keep the fax of the assignment too. Keep a separate file for each signing company you work with. Keep a record of the checks sent to you and which jobs the check is paying for. Signing companies are elusive about this. Their goal is to confuse you so that they can fail to pay you for a job, and that you will not know. When you receive a check, you can mark your records that a particular job(s) was paid for.
Send weekly bills! You need to bill your customer's weekly to ensure payment. The bill must include the date the signing was completed, the borrower's name, the loan number, borrower's address, and anything else the signing company wants recorded on the bill. Make sure you keep a good log book indicating what jobs were assigned that were or were not paid for yet.
Call regularly! If billing them doesn't work, call the signing company a few times and ask them to pay you quickly. Many times signing companies will lie and say that the check is in the mail when its not. If 60 days passes and you still don't have the check, try writing a demand letter.
Read our comprehensive guide to getting paid! http://www.123notary.com/howto-get-paid-signing-agent.htm has a very threatening demand letter template which works almost all the time. If that doesn't work, try hiring an attorney.
Research companies before accepting jobs next time Visit www.123notary.com/S and find out what type of reputation any company has. If they offer you a job, look them up and cancel the job if they have lots of complaints about non-payment.
