I'm another who agrees with Lee.
I continue to turn down work from any company offering lowball fees...even though I desperately want to work. You must "set your own minimums" and then "stick to your guns"
Still amazed at many SS's and what they try to pull...don't sell yourself short [or they'll own you-and so will your competition].

In my business plan, each & every signing must stand on its own merit. A promise of anything in the future is not taken into consideration as it may or may not happen.
Pefectly stated, Lee.
A verbal promise by a stranger over the telephone in a far-distant state whose only goal at the moment is to get the loan application documents asap or refinance documents signed at the lowest possible fee, isn't even as reliable as the statement, "You will get paid when the loan funds." Only the novices playing this game say, "You will get paid if the loan funds."

In my business plan, each & every signing must stand on its own merit. A promise of anything in the future is not taken into consideration as it may or may not happen. I realize that the hiring entities have their own self-serving criteria, but I'm the person doing the work and my opinion/criteria is the only one that counts.

I had a similar call yesterday. They wanted someone to do a 30 page modification in a City about 40 miles away this morning and said they wanted to pay me $50. Then it was $75. Then he sincerely asked why I would not accept $75. I told them that $75 would not entirely cover the auto expense to and from according to current IRS mileage guidelines, and did nothing to contribute for time or any other service needed. I then suggested he use one of the notaries that had a listing in the town that would not have to travel so far. He said they were too expensive. |

Here's my experience with loan application signings (AKA RESPA signings).
The hiring party wants to pay only $65 - $75 for these because "it's only 40 pages or so and should only take a short time". However, I have found that it takes up to an hour because there are things that the borrower has to fill out on these forms. They are supposed to have copies of various things to give you (W-2, driver's license, insurance declarations page, etc) and even if they have been told about that ahead of time, they probably didn't bother to look for the items until you get there.
It often takes a long while to receive payment on these, and although I have found that companies WILL make the effort to call you for the closing appointment (IF the deal progresses to that point), if you are not available - then too bad, it's on to the next notary.
These loan app/RESPA appointments are just not worth it unless they are VERY close to home, and even then only in the morning or some other "off" time that you are not likely to be doing a higher-paying appointment such as a loan package signing. I would never drive 25 miles for one of these - just not worth it.

I wonder how others handle this. Got a call from an SS saying they needed an app of "only 30 or so pages" to be done at a location over 25 miles away. That location would be mostly along a highway that happens to be under extensive construction work right now.
When he quoted the fee of $50 I almost laughed out loud. Then he asked if I'd go to $75 if I was guaranteed the closing package.
My question: What difference does the size of the package make when the time and expense involved is only minimally less for the app than the closing? And how would I know if the closing actually would be given to me if I agreed to a less than normal fee?
How do you handle this?
