A little tip to add to Paul's expert advice ...
Do NOT vacuum your keyboard - use the air cans instead. Do NOT ask me how I know this little tidbit, either. |

There is a lot of truth in that statement. Electronic components are magnets for dust and assorted debris. Not only will it cause the parts to run a lot hotter than they should, it could possibly short out exposed wires and "legs" (the prongs on an IC chip). The biggest failure and slowness may be caused by the disk drive. As dust bunnies collect on the drive, it may have problems sensing the correct position of the heads. (The physical parts are sealed, but the electronic parts are exposed.)
A thorough cleaning of a desktop PC (towers are more prone to dust because of their location) should be done every quarter. (More if in a 'dirty' environment.) Simply remove the covers and BLOW the dust and debris away. You can use a vacuum cleaner that has a soft brush attachment if your are careful when you clean the insides. Don't forget to clean the exhaust of the fan and the fan blades. You may need a Q-tip to clean them.
BE SURE TO UNPLUG THE PC FROM THE WALL BEFORE OPENING THE CASE. DO NOT TOUCH THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS WITH ANYTHING. (You may build up static electricity that can zap the component if you're not careful.)
Use "clean air" only. You can buy cans of air from almost any store that sells computers and related products. (Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Staples, Office Max, etc.)
Please read http://www.ehow.com/how_2295947_clean-pc-using-compressed-air.html for some good instructions.

I was in the Staples in Upland over the weekend and they're giving away coupons for a free computer tune-up. They'll clear out spyware, old files, and do an overhaul to get your computer running at optimum speed. I believe the offer is until April. Check online or call the Staples near you and see if they're also offering this free computer tune-up. For sure, the Staples in Upland is. |
