I received notice today that US Certified is now requiring a background check, done by NNA. I reminded them that here in California a background check is done by the FBI and The California Justice Department before anyone can become a notary. But no, a federal background check is not good enough for them, so I told them they could take me off their lists.

This post is a little late in coming. Earlier this year they offered me $100 without letting me know it was an entire family 5 people signing with several documents to notarize. In addition to this family signing, one of the family members had no ID. with the necessary name matching the docs requiring me to wait 30 minutes for two witnesses to show up. The signing took 2.5 hours.

U.S. Certified didn't offer me any additional fee for my time and efforts that also required quite a bit of communication with them.

The last time they called me with a signing I initially accepted but then 15 minutes called them back due to a scheduling conflict I had been unaware of. I was to later learn, this little issue caused U.S. Certified to be furious with me and put a huge black mark on my file that I would never be offered a job again though I had done several previous jobs just fine with them proving I'm reliable.

When they no longer called me for work, I called to ask why and the guy told me I had committed a serious issue by rejecting one of their jobs after I had accepted it. I called to dispute this claim, that if I had a scheduling issue they should not have a problem with my calling back within a reasonable time frame. The guy continued to insist I had committed some grave error with them so I requested to speak with the owner.

The owner took considerable time and said they had no problem and would work with me in the future. I explained to him the previous 5 person job I performed for $100 and a conflicting schedule that caused me to turn down one of their jobs within 15 minutes of accepting it.

After putting everything in writing and speaking with the owner over the dispute, it's been nearly six months without hearing from them. They clearly held a grudge for turning down signings with them. I didn't feel it was appropriate in view of my efforts and consistent reliability with them, that they were being snobbish and over critical. They also seemed to overstate the issue as if it caused them a huge problem when it likely was laziness on their part having to find another notary to do the job.

I wouldn't recommend them, they're impersonal and there's a very strong feeling of anti-female antagonism and usury. There seemed to be only guys in this office, and they definitely had an attitude towards me as a woman being highly critical to the point of fabricating the degree of problem my turning down their job caused them. The only reason I wanted to work for them is they paid on time and provided a good number of signings.

If you work for them, don't think they've chosen and settled on you as their LSA in your area because they'll dump you at any time over any small reason they deem fit making a mountain out of a molehill. Control issues anyone?

Sincerely yours,

Notary's Life

A few weeks ago, an SS in Colorado called me for a loan signing, met my fee, sent the confirmation, etc. I called the borrower to confirm and learned that he was already contacted by another Notary for the signing to commence the next day. I told borrower I would call the company and see what is going on and then get back to him. So I called back the SS and they said, yes, the signing is set for tomorrow with the other Notary and we're very sorry for the mix-up. I had never worked for this company. They are listed as a 5 star company. I didn't consider the experience a big deal at all.

As far as USCS goes, they do what all other SS's and TC's do - shop until they find someone who will accept their fee. It matters not that they say they have "set fees" - trust me, they'll negotiate when it's 8:30pm and they're calling to find a Notary who's willing to go out that night and get the signing completed.

It's one thing to pre-schedule an 8:30pm signing - that's easy. It's quite another when the call first comes in at 8:30pm and the SS is desperately trying to get someone to fill the order because either the borrower's rate lock expires at midnight or they are catching a plane in a few hours and have to sign that night...trust me, the SS will pay just about whatever the Notary's charges.

SS's are in business to cut costs and increase profits....Notary's are in business too....don't let your emotions get the best of you. Double booking happens. Let it be water under the bridge.

U.S. Certified Signers have been unethical in their business practices and disrespectful of me and my time as a Notary Signing Agent in having another associate of theirs, Steven, call up another Notary Signing Agent to accept their "set fee" on a loan signing assignment at the same time as Michael of U.S. Certified Signers was still on the phone with me and in the process of negotiating my Notary Signing Agent fee on that same assignment. Michael had then called me back ("to be nice", as he had put it) in order to waste more of my and his time to "vent" to me about how they have "set fees" and how U.S. Certified Signers will no longer ever negotiate their fees with Notary Signing Agents or accept Notary Signing Agent fees, only giving their assignments to those Notaries that accept their lowball "set" fee right off the bat. While speaking with Michael, it has further become very obvious to me that Michael, Steven and U.S. Certified Signers have absolutely no respect for the professional services that Notary Signing Agents provide, not for their time, feeling that it is o.k. to treat Notary Signing Agents like tools with no feelings rather than like live people.

Beware of this company and their NSA handling practices.

..Unprofessional, belittling in character and refusing to pay me (for two signings) because I refused to sign their Notary agreement. I did the jobs, they got paid, I didn't.

From the post I see, most people think they are a great company to work for. Agreeing to take full responsibility for a lawsuit against THEM is just plain stupid. I understand why seasoned, professional notaries generally do not accept assignments requiring you to sign "Notary agreement". If you're willing to shoulder complete responsibility for lawsuits against SS you are making a grave mistake.

Empathy for borrowers has no place when it comes to dealing with SS. Read those agreements people. Thanks to those peers who added their advise and support.
