This is good information. Because I have been in business for more than two years, the BBB has been soliciting me to sign-up with them. However, I hadn't heard from enough notaries if this proved to be a wise investment or not.

I went thru the procedure and now have the BBB logo on my web site. It was worth the effort. Their "Start with Trust" motto really works. That logo adds to my image. But, naturally there is a price. That price is having to post a "privacy policy"; something I did not initially have and, of course, the fees for joining. But, several NEW clients have mentioned the BBB logo - they also like my full disclosure as to "who I am" - they often comment on my competitiors have no names or real people on the "other sites". I run a totally consumer oriented operation. Anyone unhappy with my work? The first thing I always do is offer a refund, in full. That has happened exactly twice in the past 7 years. BBB is worth doing.

When an unknown company calls you, they might ask you for references. You should ask them for references too. If they decline to give references, you can assume they are a lousy company to work for. If they give references, call the references.
If you are considering working for a company, look them up on the Better Business Bureau. The BBB is a great source of impartial and quality data about companies. It is time consuming to fill out a complaint with the BBB, so if someone went through the effort, their complaint was probably legitimate and called for. Companies registered with the BBB are likely to be conscientious and a better bet to work for.
Notary forums are an excellent source of opinions about a wide variety of companies. http://www.123notary.com/forum.htm has vast information about many signing companies. The forum on notary rotary is also excellent and is another source to check. The other forums for notaries are not frequently used and not worth checking.
