Hello all. Recently on the NNA Notary Liability webinar the attorney stated many attorneys that come after a notary never discover that the notary has E&O insurance, therefore they may not hotly pursue you. They go after you more if they know you have a deep pocket of insurance. Moral of story, don't advertise you have insurance. Only let signing companies know if they require it and keep it to yourself otherwise. I'd think twice about putting it on my card, website, etc. Also, if you get a call from an attorney to drag you into court, NEVER volunteer information about your insurance or anything else.

So far my experience with the local title companies have been that they usually have their own signing services dept/division which they tell you to fill out a Notary Signing Agent packet for, something that you could have done through their website from the comfort of your own home while saving gas and time. I even bring a nicely design single page notary profile that lists all my information, fees, certificates, service areas and they still won't accept it and say I need to fill out their packet, usually for legal reasons.
I had high hopes for this marketing effort but seems like there’s little payoff for the amount of effort. That’s been my experience at least. It might be different for non local title companies though. I service several rural areas (some only have one title company in town) but have yet to try this approach with them.
I agree with Renee though in that banks seem to be VERY interested in meeting you even if they have their own notaries on staff so I would definitely suggest taking the time to introduce yourself to as many as you can.

I'm wondering if this approach has worked well for anyone. I too am thinkig of doing this to some local TC's and as mentioned, possibly some rural ones. The lady who got me started in this biz, and owns a SS, told me to take donuts! I've also done a rough draft of a flyer with my charges for the popular counties around here to drop as well. Any info would be great. Thanks!

Hi Cheryl, I wouldn't leave a W9 or commission letter but I like the idea of the goody bags! One of my best regular notary customers came from simply walking in the door and introducing myself. It was a convelescent hospital. The next time I cold call, I think I'll have goody bags too. Good luck!

Kathy, Thank you for the regards. I am not crazy about the "door to door" aspect. But I am up for the challenge. No one else is going to make money for me, so I must do what I think is best to market my business...and it seems to me that marketing materials that are actually tangible, and a face to put it to is what I hope may work right now. I wish the best for you as well. Thank you!

Cheryl: I do wish you success in this challenging area of marketing. My best advice to you would be just remember it will be like door to door sales - plan in advance that you will have to take quite a few negatives before you will get one positive. Just Hang In There!!! and Happy Hunting!

Renee- Super Appreciate That! Here, in California, there are several real estate offices in one location, all over. Competition is fierce between these companies. You see one go up, you can guarantee to see another go up within a block or two, or even a few doors down. And unlike long ago, where you went across town or even to another town for servicing, now if you see a real estate office, you will find a TC/EC/Financial Inst. very close by. Your post makes a lot of sense and I will take that all into consideration. Thank you SO MUCH!

You might also consider taking this marketing to T/C's that do NOT have an office w/in 20-30 miles of you. Those that are inside your 'territory' are more than likely doing whatever closings they have, themselves. Those that are outside your territory, should they have closings inside your territory, might have more interest in your services.
Inside your territory, you might also press palms with real estate agencies, small mtg co's, banks, - those are the people the T/C's want to hold favor with and many do not close their own deals. |

I am going to walk in. This way, I forfeit the "no's" and can at least get my material in the door. Thank you on your advice about NOT leaving my W9 and commission info with my materials. I send them all the time to Signing co's during signups, but wanted to bounce the idea off someone else, in case I needed a reality check. I do have Licensed/Bonded/Insured on my information that they will be receiving. Thanks again and have a great rest of wknd.

I've never done marketing like that so take this for what it's worth...I don't think I would leave that info there...I usually include a W-9 with my first invoice with a new company so they have it on file at the time they need to pay me - prior to that it'll probably just end up in the "G" file..:)
You might consider adding a small line on your business cards at the bottom or on the back (says she who just thought of this and didn't do it in my new order of cards!!) - "Bonded (if applicable) and Insured" - then if they want you they can ask for it when they're ready to use your services. JMHO
Are you cold-calling the title companies or did you call and make an appointment to come in and introduce yourself? Curious as I've never done this...

I am preparing my advertising materials and goodie bags to take to the title companies within my county. In my materials, I was wondering if it would be appropriate to include a copy of my W-9 with my EIN (not my SS#, of course), along with a copy of my commission. My reasoning for this is to expedite any signup procedures they may require. Would it be appropriate procedure, similar to signing up with Signing Co's?
Thanks so much in advance!
