This and so many other stories are good to repeat when someone expresses an interest in this line of work (thereby becoming a competitor). I did a recent nearby closing where a woman expressed an interest in becoming an "NSA." I mentioned that at least half the time, the process worked smoothly and was a pleasant way to earn money. But, then there are the other occasions that make folks wonder. Summing up a few of the stories posted on the forums, I added, "You get to meet all kinds of folks in non-public places." She said that "retailing" was probably a better place for her. |

I would not have sat around waiting for a borrower who was not ready to sign. They could use their absence from the room as a way to accuse the Notary of damaging their stuff or stealing something. I would have handed the borrower my card and requested that she call me back when she was ready to sign. Then I would have left and then driven to the nearest Starbucks or McDonalds and waited for her call. I'd only allow a certain time for this after which we'd have to reschedule the appointment. If I had other appointments, hers would be moved to the end of the line.
I wouldn't even sit in the car in front of the home. I'd drive somewhere. A neighbor could claim they saw my car there the whole time and it would be my word against the homeowner's as to whether I was in their home or in the car. By driving away, my car is not there for them to say I was in their home.
I never sit in anyone's home waiting. I'm not a crook and wouldn't want to give a borrower the opportunity to use me as a scapegoat if something's damaged or missing from their home. JMHO |

Wow, how rude to make you wait while she took a shower! I had a private notary job just yesterday with something similar. They called my phone three or four times between 6 and 7:30 AM! I leave my phone downstairs at night and don't hear it or answer it until I get up. I called back at 8 AM and they acted like it was extremely urgent and imperative that they meet with me ASAP.
I told them I could meet them at my local Starbucks in 20 minutes. I was there - they weren't. I called after 10 minutes (got voice mail), and was just about to leave at 15 minutes when they finally sauntered in. I mentioned that I was almost going to leave, as I had been waiting for them for 15 minutes and they acted very surprised and said, "Oh, well we came as fast as we could." No apology for keeping me waiting or anything. I should have known - anyone who calls four times before 7:30 AM is just plain rude and has no manners! I do not advertise 24 hour service!

I had a closing last week, but when I got to the lady's house, she was just getting in the shower. I had to sit around while she took a shower and got dressed, it took over 45 minutes...
Afterwards, she still smelled, so I would say she needed to use more soap... HAHA... Life in the traveling notary lane, never a dull moment...
