I do bring reading material to read in between appointments if they are not close to my home. I am a mom to a 4 year old and I enjoy the break to read!!! And, it saves gas. I have never considered a mobile office. Just seems like too much to have to coordinate. I also have never needed one, although I have only been a notary for 3 years so wasn't involved in the boom years where everyone was so busy. I have considered buying a fuel efficient car that my husband could drive to work and back during the day and I could drive in the evenings. I would probably keep my SUV though, as I need the room at times. No, I would never ride a bike to an appointment! It would be dangerous to carry my briefcase and if I got oil from the chain on my pants and ruined them it would cost a lot more than a few dollars of extra gas.
If gas goes to $20 a gallon, we will have to get paid more. All the other services are going up due to the increase in fuel prices, and so would ours. Right now the fuel price is only costing me maybe $4 more per job since most of my work is nearby. I don't like it but business is slow enough that right now I don't want to rock the boat. So, I absorb it.

I was just talking about this yesterday! Since sometimes a no-sign means no-money (escrow/title/lender jobs), I'm very careful now about who I work with and how far I go.
I'm also having my signers sign an Agreement to pay for my travel fee (specified) if the loan doesn't fund for any reason beyond my control (ie; their ID isn't valid, they cancel their loan, it's a no-sign). I make this a part of my introduction and I've not had one person refuse (yet!). Every lender rep I sign for has agreed to this and is perfectly fine with it.
Signing companies are a different story - I just make sure that THEY will be paying me due to a no show or no sign (I don't bring my Agreement).
I also try to combine my signing(s) with errands so I make the road trip as productive as possible. So far, Costco is still the cheapest gas in my area.
I heard Chevy's coming out with an electric car called "Volt" and I agree that rising gas prices will force the car manufacturers to come up with alternate sources for transportation.

What are some logistics notaries can use to save gas? Is it worth it to bring something to read or do between appointments so you don't have to go all the way home? Are mobile offices good so you can print in the privacy of your car? Is it worth it to get a hybrid or more efficient car? How about riding a bicycle to closeby appointments ( desperate ). Driving slower so you don't have to brake and accelerate is one way to save gas.
Right now, we complain, but we can still afford gas. What if gas is $20 per gallon, then we will really have to county each drop of gas and have strategies to dictate each day. On the other hand, new cars that burn ethanol will be developed if the price of gas keeps rising since America is the corn producing king of the world. |
