If it's a local TC or Escrow company near my home that I do signings for, they usually have an in-house Notary and don't have a huge pool of standby Notaries so if they call and I'm not available, for them I will recommend two friends I know who are top notch Notaries. If it's an out-of-state SS or TC, they know how to find an alternate from directories - I don't have any "key clients" in loan signing business. Only for general notary work do I have key clients.

I never thought about this one before, but its a very important idea. I think its good to have a few people that you can refer all of your extra business to. You should be able to vouch for the quality of their work, otherwise you are damaging your reputation too. You strengthen your relationship to your clients this way by providing a SERVICE of quality referrals, even when you can't provide the actual service. You also could get reciprocal business from the handful of notaries who you give your "leftovers" to. Great thought, Ken!!! |

I personally refer them to a couple of folks that I know that will do a great job. I always remind them not to forget about me the next time they need a notary and I then hope for the best. I want them to have the best possible service so if I lose them it is OK.

I give the names of two local notaries who I know can do the job and who have referred business to me in the past....I'd rather refer them to someone who knows what they're doing than have the company blame me for sending them to someone who has no clue - those are the only two names I give out and they're the only ones I feel confident the company would be happy with. Depending on the location I also refer to a notary in my outer county (farthest reaches of my service area) if I can't accommodate or if it's just not cost effective for me to go that far (one or two pages and 60-75 miles) ...
If the company tells me they tried those two or three and they're not available, I then refer them to 123Notary or Notary Rotary..

Sometimes you just can't service a key client. Be it a scheduling conflict or you are away on vacation. So - I would like to know how my agust peers solve the problem.
I "used" to share a web site - and would send what I could not process to my "site mate". That arrangement, due to differences of philosophy no longer exists.
I have to do "something" -
I can send them to an inferior notary knowing they will be glad to call me next time.
I can send them to a professional - and possibly lose the client.
I can refer them to 123notary.com and boast about how they can put in their zip code and find someone nearby. (my current choice).
I know some really rotten notaries and some wonderful professionals and, of course, there is good old 123notary.com.
What do you do when you are in the same situation?
