I like to think of an oath as an affirmation.

Everybody made good points here. I'm glad this topic is so popular. I wasn't sure if it would be. Sometimes an oath can be an optional accompanyment to an acknowledgment. Any thoughts on that one?

I use the Black's Law Dictionary version of the word acknowledgment. There is no other spelling of the word in the description. I always knew the spelling to be without the e. I got laughed at in college for adding the extra e. The same goes for the word judgment.

Dr. J.

Here in New York the ack is handy if the affiant signed the doc prior to my arrival. NY does not require me to "see them sign" - my legal requirement is to ID them, ask if they did sign, then notarize. The Jurat's "sworn to and subscribed" however requires me to actually witness the signing process.
