Hi Jeremey,

Haven't been here in a long time, but I thought I'd check it out after seeing your reminder to update. Thanks!

First, I don't know about the test - at least not since last June, when I last renewed. I vaguely recall some tricky questions, but I did an online course that was much harder than the actual exam, IMO.

But, you raise a very good issue about changes in laws. I'm not sure what you mean by "in the meantime", but there have been some very significant changes to CA notary law twice in the last couple of years. All the details are available on the Secretary of State website.

It amazes me how many other notaries have no idea. In the course of my signing and other notary work, I fairly frequently run into people who are notaries at their job. For them, it's just a sideline to their main job and they apparently don't often give it much thought. And, unfortunately, many also don't bother to stay abreast of changes. The changes include issues related to wording on certificates, what is allowed for IDing someone, and there are also significant potential new penalties for notaries. For any more detail, anyone who isn't already aware of these issues should read the newletter(s) at the SOS website. Again, this is just for California.

How is the California notary exam these days? Is it harder? Did they change the laws at all in the mean time?

Kelly, I don't know if you remember me (why would you!?) but I took your Notary Essentials 101 workshop and it was fantastic. Wish I would have taken it BEFORE my notary class!!! Tami

I think that an "overlapping", redundant strategy for studying for the CA notary test makes sense. Take home tests have the property that you can review them again and again. Live seminars have the property that you have group interaction, the ability to ask questions ( and maybe even get answers ), and since you are there, your attention will be on full blast.

Why not do both methods to maximize and optimize your chances for getting a high score. Even if you pass with a low score, you still need to know your stuff if you want to do a good job as a notary. Redundancy is a great idea when studying. You absorb more material more concretely with repetition and seeing it in more contexts: educational, and in the real world as well.

Thanks for asking, Carmen! Be sure to read THE ENTIRE QUESTION and then READ EVERY SELECTION before you choose your answer! There is often more than one right answer so that means you must choose THE BEST answer... easier said than done, I know!

Download (free) our CA Notary Handbook at http:www.ss.ca.gov and actually study it!

Download (free) Dan's practice test at www.NotaryClasses.com and see how you do!

I suggest you attend a LIVE 6-hr mandatory course - not the HomeStudy versions, even if you are a renewing notary. I like "social" venues and opportunites to meet new people/make new friends and I think even a seasoned veteran MAY learn a thing or two! It's only ONE DAY in FOUR YEARS... come on! That's nothing :)

love, kelly

Hi Kelly,

Thank you so much for your suggestion for the California section!! What a fabulous idea!

Was the test so much different than when you took it 4 years ago? And if so what specifically made it different?

C

My commission is coming due and I just took the California Notary Exam for August - IT WAS TRICKY! Read your handbook and take advantage of the free study info and pre-tests that are offered. Honestly, the test was more like a test about a test, not a test of your notary knowledge, sad but true!

All the best,
