Marine Protest

Function: noun

A marine protest is a very old type of notary act that is still part of notarial law in Rhode Island. This type of notarization is used to document bad weather and how it effected a shipment. The captain or officer of a ship can use this documentation to protect the owner of the ship from claims made by charterers, recipients of goods, or anyone else involved in the particular shipment effected by bad shipping conditions.
