Death Certificates

Definition 1:
Notaries in most states are not permitted to notarize certified copies of Death Certificates. However, it is common to use a certificate called a certified copy by document custodian which requires the signer to certify that the copy of the death certificate is a true and correct copy. This way, someone other than the notary is "certifying" the document. From the notary's point of view, they are only executing a sworn oath which is perfectly legal.
