I agree...I used to think it unprofessional and not fair to the people we're sitting with, so I never took calls during a signing - in a way I still feel that way but now take calls, keeping them short and sweet and very "neutral" in nature on my end...it is, after all, my business.

I've had service people here at my house doing work for me and they ALWAYS take calls...calls are money...period..

Great points. I am glad I read this thread, as I had always ignored calls when on a notary job, as I thought it hugely unprofessional. Upon reading this thread and thinking that if several calls each day happened when I was notarizing documents, my business suffers and so do those that chose to call me for help.

Even though it is considered unprofessional to talk on the phone while on the assignment, I agree with Lisa it could be worthwhile to answer it.
I always apologize for taking another call, and as long as I keep it short and get back to my assignment right away i beleive it's O.K. The industry we are in, requires flexibility and we are on call most of the time.... borrowers understand that.

Previously, I didn't accept calls during signings but have since changed my opinion of that. I can negotiate a deal without the signers knowing as my answers are one word answers to the scheduler: Yes, no, when, okay, send.....etc. The call takes less than 20 seconds and I'm finished. If the phone rings, I say to the borrowers "This may be the title company calling".....then I answer.

Lately, I haven't had any calls during signings so it hasn't been an issue.
