Become a Wisconsin notary publicRequirements
You must be a legal resident of the United States with an eighth grade education or equivalent.
You must be familiar with the duties and responsibilities of a notary public. You must not have
an arrest or conviction record that is unacceptable to the state which generally means not having
a felony or conviction involving a crime that involves moral turpitude. You do NOT need to be a
Wisconsin resident, nor do you need to be a United States citizen.
General information
Please visit the Secretary of State's website to download your Wisconsin notary application,
commission form, and change of address forms just in case you move during the term of your
commission. You must take an oath of office, get a $500 surety bond and file both with your local
county clerk. The term of office for a Wisconsin notary is four years. Once commissioned, you are
required to get a notary seal, and a notary journal or register is optional, but highly recommended.
