Become a Tennessee notary publicRequirements
A TN notary public is elected by the county that they reside in or maintain their principal place
of business. There is an application fee of $12 that must be submitted with an application to the
county clerk. Once approved,
Division of Business Services prepares, records and forwards to the County Clerk the notary
commission signed by the Governor and the
Secretary of State.
the division of business services will prepare, record, and forward the notary commission. The TN
notary commission will have been signed by the Secretary of State and the Governor. An oath must
be taken and a surety bond must be filed as well, as the last step before the notary commission
paperwork is given to the notary.
Other information
If the notary moves out of their county, they must notify the county clerk of that county and pay
a $7 fee to the county clerk. If the notary's name changes, the same procedure applies. However,
the notary commission will not change the wording of the name or county after any changes have been
made for the life of the commission. A notary term in TN is four years. Notaries must have a
circular notary seal which has the words, "State of Tennessee notary public", or "Tennessee notary
public", the notary's name printed at the top ( exactly how it appears on the notary commission ),
and the county of election must be at the bottom.
