yep! some people do take advantage of miscommunications... so, make it clear on the phone: time, location, fee, ID, contact phone# etc. before leaving the house!

Once in a great while I too am faced with "buyers remorse." Though they totally agreed to my fee PRIOR to and DURING the process - AFTERWARD they feel the fee was inappropriate. Somehow some think I can go to their location in the middle of the night for the princely sum of 2$.

I do offer a full refund if they are not happy. My only request is that the original embossed notary page(s) be returned to me. So far, no takers of what I feel is a fair offer. It is unreasonable to expect a refund if you don't return the "goods."

If the borrower is OK with a public place like that, then I am too. But I always make it clear, if I have to travel (which I do as a mobile notary) I always charge a travel fee. I also always will tell them when we schedule the appointment, "If I arrive and for some reason we do not sign the documents (lacking ID, documents not correct, refuse to sign etc) then I will still charge the fee to travel." Then I go on and make sure its is clear that each person needs ID and needs to be present or we may not be able to do the notary. If I know they are coming for out of the area, I will tell them, when you get to a certain freeway exit or street, call me so then I can leave to meet you there. Usually that helps cut down on the extra wait time.

I've even signed at an In-N-Out and Del Taco. Those signs felt more awkward to me.

One Latte and one Jurat -- no whip!

A notary agreed to meet some clients at a Starbucks. They clients had to drive a long way to get their. They agreed to the travel fee at first. Then, once the job was completed, they complained about paying a travel fee, when they drove to very near to where the notary lived. This person wrote a complaint about the notary and was very angry.

I wrote to the notary explaining that they need to educate the clients about the difference between a stationary notary and a mobile notary. If you go to a stationary notary, you go to THEIR office, during THEIR office hours, and if they are not in then the CLIENT does the waiting, not the notary. The notary has OTHER things to do in their office, and doesn't lose a minute waiting for the client. If the client has bad ID, the notary tells them to go home and get another one.

Mobile notaries might drive to a neutral location like a nearby starbucks. But travel and waiting is still involved even if the client also is driving. In such a case a discounted travel fee is in order. The biggest issue is that the notary might arrive on time and have to wait 45 minutes for their inept clients to arrive. My suggestion is to not leave your house until the client is at the actual Starbucks. If they claim to be close, they are generally so inept that it will take them another 30 minutes to get there. People lie, and are dumb about finding places. Let them wait for you instead of you waiting for them -- although you still need to be glued to the phone.

Solution #2
Have you tried Starbucks Blonde? It is a light roast coffee. Very caffinated, but not so rich and deep like the French style roast. I never had it, but am curious. Let me know if it is any good. You can sip on coffee and get insonmia waiting for your clients.
