But the issue is does your state REQUIRE a notary to obtain a thumbprint in their journal (a la California)...if your state notary laws do not REQUIRE you to obtain that thumbprint, then IMO you are overstepping your authority by imposing additional requirements and restrictions on signers.

The "you" being a collective "you" as in all notaries, not "you" personally.

My state has no problem with it as long as it is voluntary.

Probably because if a notary's state laws do not require thumbprints, the notary is overstepping their authority by requiring it. This one particular company that sent this is very hands-on with their notaries and pro-active about issues that crop up.

I agree with them on this matter. If a notary's state laws do not require a thumbprint/fingerprint in a journal then the notary should not be unilaterally imposing requirements on a document signer that are not required by law.

I got it today; it's no problem for me - Florida notaries are not authorized to take fingerprints anyway. We can ask but cannot refuse service because someone refuses.

I've taken one thumbprint in over 5 years as a notary here.

I just received an email from one of the signing companies I do work for and it instructed all Notaries to NOT finger print any client for them unless you are in California as this is the, according to the email, only state that requires finger printing. It went on to say DO NOT FINGER PRINT thier clients unless you are in a state that requires finger printing. HAS ANYONE RUN INTO THIS REQUEST.
