I check the IDs at the rehearsal and write down the serial numbers so they can be recorded in my journal on the wedding date. The marriage license does not get signed until after the legal ceremony. You can't sign it the day before because you would be postdating which is illegal. So yes, people will need to put down the bouquets for 3 minutes.

Take a minute to read this recent article from the St. Pete Times: http://www.tampabay.com/news/notary-blamed-in-marriage-fraud-case/1125836
It is important that you follow the laws to the letter. Performing marriages are some of the most important notarial acts you will perform.

Witnesses are not required but if there are witnesses present they should sign in the appropriate spaces. The bride and groom do not have to sign the license after the ceremony, but they should sign your journal. Black ink must be used on the license.

After the ceremony, it is YOUR responsibility to return the license to the clerk. You can NOT give the license back to the couple, even I'd they say they are going to take it to the clerk in person.

Hey All -

Brand New Notary of 7 days here - be gentle with me!

Company paid for me to become a notary as a "service" offered to our employees, plus I'm doing a couple of weddings on the side as well.

Stupid question is about those weddings - at what point should I have everyone sign the license ? During the rehearsal, or before the ceremony, or when ? It's not like the bride is going to be able to whip out her drivers license from her bouquet for me on the day of....

Thanks for the patience with the newbie - not trying to take business away from anyone here in the Sunshine State !
