Our notary community might benefit and be inspired by hearing about the career histories of other notaries. I'm going to divide these by geography. If any Los Angeles notary public or notaries would like to talk about their experience and life history as a notary public or mobile notary, that would be wonderul.

My personal biography as a Los Angeles notary public:
I became a notary in 1997. I wanted to be a traveling notary or mobile notary. My friend told me how that would be a great job for me since I enjoyed driving, but was tired of being a courier. I was a substitute ESL teacher at the time going from assignment to assignemtn with no fulfillment. I enjoyed using my multilingual skills, but even that got old after a while. So, I studied the CA notary handbook, and took the exam. I did fairly well on the exam after an excess of twenty-five hours reading the confusing legalese.

After becoming a notary, I found that marketing myself was a never ending struggle. I manually called about one hundred banks, insurance brokers, attorneys, etc. I got one job as a result. It was my first job, and I really didn't know what I was doing since nobody had ever coached me. I got through it thank god. Then, I woke up and figured out that the only way to get work was through the yellow pages. It took a while to get ads in the yellow pages as you can only create ads once per year and each yellow pages has its own schedule. The most successful one was advertising as a Los Angeles notary public in the los angeles yellow pages.

I got tons of the most unpleasant and difficult notary jobs. I went to jails once per week, and hospitals twice per week. I got lots of home jobs, and office notarizations too which were much nicer. There were a few bizarre jobs too, such as notarizing an accused kidnapper, and an arsonist who was in jail.

After some time, I found that yellow page ads were very expensive, so I started to advertise on other people's websites, and then started 123. That was when I learn how to sign loans. I went all over the place. I went to Hemet, Victorville, Lancaster, all over Orange county, Ventura, and anywhere I could get jobs. Its generally not recommended to try to do loan signing full time, because you really have to hustle to make a reasonable living. If you work part time, you can pick and choose the jobs you like and stay local. Gas was cheap in those days, and I enjoyed the drive ( usually ).

After that, I quit being a notary and worked full time on 123notary which is a very time consuming and interesting job.

Enough about me... tell us about your experience. If you are not from Los Angeles, please create your own post with the same format: ( name of city notary public biography ).

Thanks
