Brandon, I'm a firm believer in paying for advertisement and using guerilla marketing tactics. I had a website w/excellent SEO rankings. One day I drove around and cold called on every law firm in the city. I frequently posted on Craig's List. I used the Yellow Pages and mailed my information to law firms. What worked best? I don't know but I had a great customer base. |

This is a line of work that I think more signing agents should consider. I was contacted by law firms (without any solicitation on my part). I believe I served my first papers in 2009.
Just like anything else, you'll need to do your research. Find out what you state requirements are for Process Server and go from there. Many states have minimal requirements.
I'm a woman and safety is my number one concern. There are some neighborhoods I avoid and I'm upfront with this information. There are some papers I won't serve: evictions, restraining orders, etc. Most hiring entities will understand.
There are two books on Amazon.com about this profession. I reviewed the both under the name of Huntsville Mobile Notary. I recommend them both. The newer book, however, is the better of the two.
I'll be happy to share what I know in this forum. No phone calls, please. I really don't have the time or patience to coach by telephone. However, I'll gladly answer most questions here.

Sounds like Pennsylvania is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT GIG...
Process serving here (in CA) seems far less a production and more like delivering loan docs. 9 times out of 10 the recipient thanks me for the delivery... I do have a credential and I have a badge (badge is not required but helpful when serving paper at a business location). Usually, I'm in my car and half-way down the block before the person realizes what they have just been given...
I prefer daylight, never go to areas that I would consider as generally unsafe, and am in far less a risky position than many of the thousands of signings I've completed. As with Notary work, you have to use your head...
I don't want to be a cop. I don't have a modified vehicle or wear Kevlar. I also believe that I am acting in a manner that is safe while doing some good. The contract I've been working lately is servicing dead-beat dads who need to pay up. There is a certain satisfaction to doing that kind of work. As I said, it's less dangerous than many of the signings I've been on too. My biggest complaint about this work is that it won't make me rich...I'm hoping for the mortgage work to pick back up...

hi folks,
chuck warrick here, vince, had replied to my note, and (i apologize) still can't find. so, i mailed him directly. here are a couple of questions he had for me.
1. "Please explain an "arrest warrant", is this a civilian's arrest or is it an arrest by a state officer (or?)-
my answer is: i as an elected offical, i have arrest authority throughout the state of PA. I of course cannot do this, without a summary or criminal warrant in hand- politely a summary warrant is usually for traffic offenses, writing bad checks, harrassement, public drunkness, disorderly conduct etc. On the criminal side, i only go after someone with nothing higher than a misdemeanor 3, which as example: A small amt of marijuiana, bad checks over $250.00. i don't do feloney arrest's.
2. quest: The uniform you wear looks like a state trooper, is it one authorized or recommended by the state of PA?
Ans: I as a state constable (independent contractor-hiring self out to the courts/attorneys etc), do not have a specific clothing requirement. altho, in my 16 years of experience, i wear a uniform, for the looks of authority, and i look very professional. We do have our own State Constable Patches if we are to wear a uniform, many don't thru-out our state. some days i don't; there are neighborhoods that you enter wearing a uniform will start a signal immediatley to the people of crime-word passes along quickly.
Quest: Are you expected to take someone into custody as part of this arrest?
Ans: In some cases yes, Politely: written on top of all our warrant's (state police/police/sheriff) it states: "To Police Officer": In the name of the Commonwalth of PA, you are commanded to take the defendant-john/jane doe, into custody. When the defendant is taken into custody, either (a) accept a signed guilty plea and the full amt of fines and costs, (b) accept a signed not guilty plea and the full amt of collateral, (c) accept the amt of resititution, fine and costs due following a guilty plea or conviction, or (d) if unalble to pay, promptly take defendeant for a hearing on the bench warrant as provided in Pa.R.Crim.P 431 (c) (3).
ques: do you have a cage in your car??
ans: yes, i purchased a police un-marked ford with a cage, honestly, if you are going to do this-warrant of arrest. Buy A Cage. A cage may save your life. i can tell horror stories of people who never had one. i wouldn't leave home without it.
I also wear body armourer, even to serve civil process.
ques: do you only get $25 for this.
ans: no, I get $25 for the warrant-$2.50 for return of warrant, i receive mileage (rate now $5.05 per 10 miles), i receive $5.00 for custody, $5.00 for arraignment, $17.00 for transporting to hearing/jail, get $5.00 for release to jail, i am also to receive $13 per hr, beyond the 1st half hour (waiting for the magistrate to arrive). so i do make a couple of dollars, yet, sometimes, you go thru a lot. that is all on arresting.
so, for not physically arresting, showing up at door, giving chance to turn self in (again, we are talking summary warrant's), then i would get $25 warrant, $2.50 return of warrant, and mileage.
i apologize for this lengthly response, but, if i try to make short-cut's, i'm not sure if anybody would understand. you may still not.
i hope i have helped, and please anybody, don't ever hesitate to ask me anything with process serving in PA. i am not saying i am the pro from dover, but trust me, many magistrates (district judges) have and do call me on certain subjects; just to make sure of the clarity-don't forget, i went 10 years, to the same continuing education as they. cept, i paid attention to certain areas of our classes, where they didn't.
thanks for reading again. chuck warrick
there is no spell checker, if there is someone please tell me where it is. i know when i type, i don't always spell the correct word. maybe don't |

"yes, it can be dangerous, yet, if you evaluate the situation you are approaching (i.e. serving warrant of arrest, prevention of abuse, evictions, selling personal property, serving civil process-hearing notices, divorce papers, custody etc)"
Chuck, please explain an "arrest warrant". Is this a civilian’s arrest or is it an arrest by a state officer (or?)? The uniform you wear looks like a state trooper, is it one authorized or recommended by the State of Pennsylvania? Are you expected to take a person into custody as a part of this arrest? Does that mean taking them to court, to jail or to somewhere else? Do you have a “cage car”? And do you earn $25 total for this? |

hi all, chuck warrick here from penna.
i am a process server (in pa) this position is called a state constable, and is an elected/appointed position for 6 years.
yes, it can be dangerous, yet, if you evaluate the situation you are approaching (i.e. serving warrant of arrest, prevention of abuse, evictions, selling personal property, serving civil process-hearing notices, divorce papers, custody etc)
one rule of thought, never enter someone's home when they say come in.. you should carry some type of identification to show you are who you say. i am fortunate to a point-when i do my job, i wear a uniform (look like a state trooper)-that gives some le-way of authority.
it is a great job, and could be a fun one. politely though, it can be very dangerous. i have many situations that weren't fun. and whotever you do. do not try to stick your hand in a door etc. people have tried to smash my hands several times.
again, i love my job, fore i work when i want, and take off. just always be alert-stay safe. hey, if you gut says something is wrong here. then leave the situation right away. never argue, just say your right and leave the area as soon as possible. not worth the $25 or whotever it is to be paid.
i will answere any/all questions bout this. please ignore my bad misspellings. thank you chuck warrick |

Just recently I told someone that If I have to get a regular 9-5 'I would want to shoot myself in the head'. So I am with you. The thought of a traditional job is beyond comprehension for me. I am truly blessed to have Jeremy and my signing work.

Yep-
I'm using this to cash-flow but might not get rich doing it... at between $10-$65 each, I rely on volume to make it worthwhile. I can do it between signings or instead of them... For some of them I'm barely breaking even as they need to be personally served-BUT-I'm not spending an hour on-site either...
hey, I'm just trying to think outside the box and stay self-employed!
Going back to a 9-5 gig...just thinking about it makes me sick

I did do some investigation into process serving in my area and it seems that the majority of people who get involved in this business are Private Detectives and Police Officers. At least here in Palm Beach County. I'm under the impression from a couple of guys I know at the Sheriffs Dept. (my Mom worked at the court house) that there is an element of danger involved. They tell of stories of people getting violent when you try and serve them. Palm Beach County is a feeding ground for the show COPS. To tell the truth I don't know but if more than a handful of people say that; there must be some truth in it. I'm a feerd |

Another type of job that fits well into a mobile notary schedule is process serving. You might have to serve some angry criminals though. I looked into this roughly twenty years ago and chickened out, but if you are hungry enough, it starts looking appetizing. Any thoughts? Has anyone tried this or researched it? |
