Which is more important, being good at following directions or being knowledgeable about the documents? In a perfect world, you should be good at both, but few people are.
We tested a few thousand Notaries over the phone in the last few months. My findings were that most Notaries can't or won't follow simple instructions. They prefer to do what they usually do rather than what is asked of them. They also try to reason with you rather than following directions which is a problem especially when their reasons don't take into consideration the bigger picture.
Do you think that Title companies should look for Notaries who follow directions perfectly and have an average knowledge of the documents or signing experts who just can't do what they are asked?

Depends... not enough info here to make a reasoned answer.
What did your test involve?
Knowledgeable would be most important, imo.
Many 'directions' given in loan docs simply aren't legal in all states. An example would be where the notary completes a "Identity Verification & Acknowledgment Certificate" where the notary's signature is the only one required, yet they ask for a 'stamp as proof of commission'. Not legal in my state and I doubt it's a legal use of a stamp in any state.
If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will. |
