Do you ever go to a signing and fill out the journal entries for a signer ahead of time? What does this lead to? What if the signer won't sign? Is this a waste of time?
What about filling out the acknowledgment forms after you go home after the signing? Does anyone do this? Is that a good habit?

If I receive docs in time, I go through them and fill out a separate sheet of paper with most of the information for my journal, but I do not actually enter it in the journal until the closing takes place since my journal is for notarizations that actually occur. If the closing is cancelled by the lender or borrower, or if the borrower decides not to sign after all, there's no reason for the closing to appear in my journal. I merely write "Cancelled by XXXX", the date cancelled, and who cancelled it on the confirmation of assignment document and file that away.
I personally do not fill out any of the paperwork prior to the closing, but if there is time, I don't see why one could not fill in dates and names, leaving just the notary signature and stamp to be added at the closing after the borrower(s) sign. In addition, I do not complete the acknowledgments or any other documents after the closing. All paperwork is completed and notarized at the closing table in front of the borrower(s). Not only is this good practice, and the law in many states, but if by chance you mess up the acknowledgment on a document, your stamp doesn't come out clearly, or whatever other error may occur, if you are at the table with the borrower(s), you can just pull their copy, have them sign that, and substitute the correctly completed document for the messed-up one.

Journal: I prefill as much as possible - doc names, borrower names, dates, property address in notes section. Saves a bundle of time at the table. If a no-sign I note that in my journal - no biggie.
I prefill all my certs at home before going to the signings. As for doing the certs after the fact, that's illegal here in Florida. Notarizations MUST be done at the time of the signing in front of the signers. No additions, deletions or corrections can be made after the fact.
