How to lose half your clients while on vacation! This blog tells it all. Many notaries don't realize that signing companies expect them to be available by phone within 72 hours of their last job. If they didn't get the Fedex and you are on vacation -- look out...

Other notaries come back from a long vacation only to find that their "loyal" clients have found a new favorite in their area!

Perhaps a notary should avoid booking appointments 48 hours before their departure. That way they will be available. I think there are ways to answer messages from overseas, just not sure exactly how to do that. There are sophisticated phone systems that can transcribe a phone message into an email. Carmen is the expert at all of this type of stuff.

Good point, Lisa. I agree with you.
Besides, it's not safe to let others know you are away for a period of time....Who knows who is calling you,….maybe the caller is a…. part/time thief and might visit your house while you are away ?....

You can go on vacation <without anyone knowing you're on vacation> and still keep your loan signing clients and your general notary clients. I think the dumbest thing anyone (Notary or otherwise) is to tell callers their business.....in otherwords, to tell someone they are _______________ <fill in the blank with on vacation, at the dentist, at the movies, or whatever else one is doing that is no one else's business>. Your answer to everyone should be "I'm booked during that day and time."

First, find out what day and time the caller would like to meet. You may be on the last day of your vacation and caller wishes to make an appointment for a few days away, or next week. Keep your business to yourself. Do not tell people where you are or what you are doing. You have no idea who is on the other end of that phone call and no way of knowing their TRUE motive for calling you. If you are not able to meet when they need to meet, refer the caller to other options (i.e. another Notary you network with, or the UPS Store, etc.)

DO NOT broadcast your plans to anyone.....if you cannot meet with a caller because you'd rather sit on your porch and watch cars go by - and count the green ones - then so be it. But your answer to the caller is "I'm booked during that day and time but I can meet with you at X time on X date." Or refer them to a Notary you network with, the UPS Store, or some other pack & ship type store.

I made it a rule for myself: When I am on vacation I always have my cell phone with me and have all my calls routed to that number.
Of course, I can’t take the job myself, but I have a business partner who could take care of business while I am away. Yes, I am on vacation, but I am still accessible by phone and this way, I can personally speak with my clients and have my business partner take care of their business. Besides, vacations away from home happen 1-2 times per year, so it’s not that big of a deal to take care of the notary business remotely.

My point: yes, I might loose the revenue during the times I am on vacation, but I DO NOT LOOSE MY CLIENTS!

Some of the tips/suggestions in this blog are good ones.

Still, it is a ridiculous notion that any "signing service" or other hiring entity would have any impact upon me while I'm on vacation. As a professional Notary Signing Agent, I am entitled to an uninterrupted vacation (as is anyone else who is on vacation). The reality is that if I'm not available for a period of time, that's exactly what a vacation is. There is NO WAY an expectation of such magic availability could ever be placed upon me.

Still, as a professional, I make sure my clients are all aware of when I am leaving and when I'll be back. I also arrange for trusted colleagues to handle any workload that cannot wait for my return. But, once I'm gone, I'm gone-and NOBODY has the right to expect me to be anywhere (sorry, but not even 5 minutes after the closing if I've already left).

One of the joys of being self-employed is having the ability (if not in truth, at least in theory) to refuse work for a valid reason. A vacation (for those of us fortunate enough to take one) is in my opinion, a valid reason for refusing work.
