civey	Posted - 12/20/2008 : 6:55:12 PM Question for all notaries: How do you handle it when someone calls you 3 to 5 hours before a closing is supposed to take place? I ask because I have had quite a few calls for same days lately and when I quote my fee they act shocked! I know we have to be ready at all times, but hey when the drive is 30 - 45 minutes one way, the docs aren't ready and it can take awhile to print, 3 to 5 hours doesn't leave much to play with. I quote my highest fee and if they aren't willing to pay it I let it go. I can assure you that the notary that left them stuck having to call me was a low baller.(you get what you pay for) I know that someone takes the low ball fee and does it in a rush, but I don't know why anyone would short themselves that way. It boogles the mind! I can and have got decent fees in this area, so I beg all notaries in NC, please don't short change yourself. We are worth it and you may need the business, but you are seriously undermining yourself and other signing agents by working under these conditions for a nickel or two.

For most most of my loan signing career (2002) most of the emailed signings have been at the last moment. I just make sure I provide great cusomter service to the borrower and keep them up to date on my progress. I just make sure I can get to them as quickly as possible. It works well for me. Lisa T.	Posted - 12/21/2008 : 1:48:48 PM 5 hour advanced notice, same day is okay with me - for appointments before 8pm. I probably would not accommodate a late loan signing - past 8pm - same day. I have in the past but wouldn't these days.

I agree with Paul regarding accepting assignments from familiar companies - those that I would like to work with more. It helps cultivate a relationship if you accept a late assignment. It's particularly good if that is not the norm for the company

I take extreme pride in my preparation and presentation and refuse to be rushed into a bad situation. If I do get a call for a "rush" job from an existing and reliable company that I've done business with in the past, I will try to accommodate them. But from a signing service that I have never worked with in the past, I'll probably pass unless it is an early morning call for a late afternoon or evening signing. LindaH	Posted - 12/20/2008 : 8:44:31 PM Getting a call 3-5 hours ahead of time is not all that unusual...I do get some scheduled a day or two in advance but it's not unheard of for them to call same day - it's the nature of the beast...heck...I get calls from companies for signings occurring in 2 hours - 45-50 miles away!! Now, depending on where the signing is located I'll make sure I have authority to change the time - I let them know my drive time and tell them right up front that if they don't have docs to me by XX time I either need to be able to change the time or it will need to be reassigned. I do stick to my guns too - I don't start signings at 9:30 or 10:00 at night any more - been there done that and don't ever want to do that again...my policy is to start a signing no later than 8:00 or 8:30....meaning docs to me by 6:00 JMO Linda www.notarydepot.com/notary/lindah http://www.notary.net/websites/LindaHubbell
