Here's my entry: The lady calls with "I had my document notarized at the bank", "however the notarization was done improperly". "So, I went to another notary and had the second notary add a second notarization". "Is my document valid?"
Note: I did neither of the notarizations, nor have I ever seen the doc.
My reply: "I suggest you take your document to an attorney for legal advice".
How on earth could she expect me (for free on the phone) to comment on a botched and redone (rebotched?) notary job.
This is my entry for the most absurd "nervy" request

An acquaintance's son got a ticket. She's a notary. She knows better. She brought me the affidavit which had not been signed to notarize for him because it was the last day to take care of it. She wasn't very happy.

A relative asked me to notarize the will of another family member who was in the far gone stages of dementia. She wasn't very happy.

Another acquaintance years ago needed her brother's car title notarized because he was selling it. Her good friend whom I worked with would not do it so she asked me. She wasn't very happy.

Ridiculous!

Arizona must be different from California. We are supposed to use credible witnesses only if the signer has none of the various gov't issued forms of ID or has no way of getting ID - not for instances where the signer is too lazy to fetch their ID.

Nervy people are annoying.

I had done a number of loan doc signings for a mobile home sales co. thru a well-known national title co. They called me one day for one that was said to be 'direct w/local TC'. When I arrived, I was presented with some other notary's screwed up certificate--and they wanted me to correct it! No signers there--and, by the way, can you date it for last week?

Just thought of another one ... absurd, sort of, but sad too ..... in bed!!

Borrower was a bedbound paraplegic - we had to sign sitting on his bed, with a notebook as a signing surface...kept passing docs back and forth...took some extra time but we finally got through it...

Did I mention he was naked with just a sheet over him??...

Like I said, sad too.. that has to be the most bizarre one I've had.

Didn't happen to me, but to a friend:

Arrive at borrower's home, need spouse to sign. Husband says "She's in bed upstairs, sick, REALLY sick, I'll run it up to her ..."

Um, sorry, she'll either have to come down, or I'll have to go up with you, must have face-to-face ...

"No, really, you don't want to expose yourself, she's that sick ..."

Um, no, really, I have to actually see her.

"Ok, then ... I guess she isn't really home."

Nervy: I got a call from a guy a couple years ago on a Saturday asking if I'd meet him and his wife to notarize some loan documents; I was in the car and said sure..where, when, what time? He said they needed it done that day at whatever time I had open BUT the docs had come in late (were supposed to be in Friday), they all had to be dated Friday and would I have a problem dating them for Friday. Told him sorry, I can't do that and he said...."I know - my wife's a notary too - thought maybe you would do a favor for a colleague"....

yeesh...

Well, mine was from a woman who honestly didn't know what she was asking is a big no-no. She called me for a private notary job. I met her at Starbucks. Upon meeting, she presented me with a document that her husband had signed, and she gave me her military ID that also lists her husband's social security number (he's listed as her sponsor) "so you can match it to his name on the form".

Husband was at work at the time. Told her sorry, no can do. He has to personally appear before the notary and present his own ID.

The only absurd requests I get are to notarize even when the ID is expired and beyond the 5 yrs issue date (for CA). They think because they haven't expired that somehow, using an expired ID is okay. Or, recently I've been told, "I do have ID, I just misplaced it." My response, "I need the ID IN HAND" not lost somewhere in LaLa land (well, I don't say THAT part, but I'm thinking it, heehee!)

The validity of the document depends on who its being accepted or submitted to. You can always ask,"What was wrong with the notarization". If the person can't answer that question, you can ask, "How do you know that the notarization was wrong?". It could be missing a stamp, signature of the notary, certificate wording, or maybe the stamp's impression wasn't so clear. Hmmm. It never hurts to ask. Referring people to an attorney is always a good idea.

Didn't think I could contribute to this topic but, after today, I can!!!

Got a call the other day from the Vietnamese Lady who co-owns the nail salon in town with her husband (used to get my nails done there)...said she needed something notarized next time I'm in area...okay..

I go today...she presents me with a Marriage License!! (I don't do weddings but I would have for them as they've always been very nice to me). Anyway, she said the lady at the court told her any notary could sign it....now, I was positive she was married to the co-owner...so I ask "aren't you married?" - she says yes, but we were married in Viet Nam....he pops in the room -I explain I can't "just notarize" it - I have to perform a marriage ceremony as that's what it states - I certify I performed the ceremony...then I have to file it with the clerk of the court... I told them I don't normally do weddings but will do it for them and say, "Do you want me to perform a ceremony?" "no!!"..."do you want to get married again?" "no!!" Are you sure? "yes!!"...

She decides she'll go back to the court and talk to the lady... Okay...so I pack up, go to car and sit shaking my head for about 5 minute trying to figure out what just happened!!

Called the court clerk when I got home and told her what had happened to give her a heads-up that she'd be seeing them again...neither one of us can figure out what they had in mind....

Talk about bizarre...:)

A company for whom I'd done many notarizations called me for another job. Upon arrival, they 'only' want me to correct the date on another notary's Acknowledgement!

And a number of general notary work phone conversations with clients who believe that 'the state pays me'.
