Often the company will overnight the documents to me. The best arrangement is when they also include the check as payment. If I insist that they do this, will they agree?

99% of companies will not pay until the loan closes. Many will keep you waiting for 30 to 60 days and if they are neglegent or crooked even longer. Keep meticulous records of who paid you what and what the check # was on the check they used to pay you.

I've only had a check come to me with docs on one occassion and it was a land purchase.

That would be extra nice if all companies were that way but since most business I have is with signing companies, it is impossible for them to pay me until they recieve their monies from closing. I had only one that was paid to me before-hand by a title company. I went to their office to pick up the docs and there laying on top was my check for $250.00. You bet there was a great big smile on my face. Although this company had an in-house notary, she told me she didn't want to travel 1.5 hours one way for a signing and would rather pay me to do it. That's the beauty in working with some in-town title companies.

I have used that as a way of getting rid of company that didn't pay. I demanded a check for the current signing and the one they failed to pay included in with the docs or don't bother to send them. They found someone else.....

Imagine the nerve of a company to not pay and then call back for another signing. I should have accepted the job and held the docs hostage until payment was made...but then I would be open for hostile legal action. Better to just move on I suppose....

I doubt it. Most of the companies need you to wait for the loan to close as they are not paying you direct. It is coming out of the borrower's proceeds. I do have one loan officer that meets me at every signing with the doc's and a check for my services. He pays me 150.00 per job. I love it.

No, I don't think so. I have not worked with any that would do this. If you want business, you will have to trust them like the rest of the notaries do and hope for the best. If you don't get paid, then you will know not to work for them anymore. You need to read the nopay list of companies.
