Our new official list of attorney states now excludes Louisiana. Please inform us if and when this information changes.

Connecticut

Delaware

Georgia

Massachusetts

South Carolina

I deleted Louisiana from the original post. Is this list still accurate?

No you didn't sound angry at all. I am very glad you let us know. Lot of folks look to me for information and of course I want to make sure it is accurate.

Thanks Again!

No problem. After reading my post I sure hope that it did not sound angry. I certainly did not intend for it to. There is just so much information out there about Louisiana and the requirements for attorney closings. I have companies call me and ask if I work for an attorney almost every day and want to clear it up for all of us hard working signing agents in Louisiana.

Nope. A bunch of mistaken people about Louisiana. No lawyer needed for closings. I do them every day and do not need to work under an attorney. As a matter of fact, Louisiana notaries can prepare legal documents, including mortgages and wills, unlike other states. We do mortgages, prepare affadavits, receive inventories, etc. The comprehensive exam to become a notary public in Louisiana is four hours long and includes blank pages for the notary hopeful to prepare a collateral mortgage package from memory, including drawing up a legal description from an attached map. I have recently contacted the National Notary Association and after they investigated my concern, they updated their site to remove Louisiana as being listed as an attorney state. I don't like to lose business to an attorney so please check this out before posting about Louisiana. Thank you to all and happy notarizing!

According to another post in this forum, I believe that Massachusetts is an attorney state.
