Become a West Virginia notary public
General information
The Secretary of State administers the West Virginia notary application process, and the Governor
issues West Virginia notary public commissions for a term of ten years. There is a $52 fee for
applying to be a notary public. Name or address changes are $2 each once your commission has be
issued.
Notary seal
You must have a West Virginia notary seal. The size must be a rectangle no larger than 1 inch high
by 2 1/2 inches wide. A West Virginia notary must use the rubber stamp seal on all notarizations,
and the seal must be placed on the document so that the information is legible. The seal must have
the words: "Notary Public", "State of West Virginia", the notary's name, business name and address
if applicable, the words: "My Commission Expires", and the date of expiration following. Notary
seals can be purchased form most stationary stores or stamp manufacturers.
Other information
If you change your name or address, you must inform the notary division and pay a small fee to make
the necessary changes to you commission. You must also purchase a new seal reflecting your new name
or address. You must destroy your old seal if your commission ends or you move out of state. Please
contact the Secretary of State's office or website to get your West Virginia notary handbook and
notary application.
