Become a Nevada notary public
New Nevada notary applicants must complete a four hour notary education class taught by the Nevada
Secretary of State's notary division. You can view the class schedule on the Nevada Secretary of
State's website. To become a Nevada notary public you must be a United States citizen or a legal
permanent resident. You must be at least eighteen years old and a resident of Nevada or a neighboring
state such as Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and California. You must not have had any felony
convictions and you must have a $10,000 bond. The bond must be filed with your local county clerk's
office where you live if you are a state resident or where you work if you are a resident of a
neighboring state. You must also take an oath given by the county clerk.
Then you can submit your Nevada notary application, filing notice and an application fee of $35
payable to the Secretary of State. You will then be issued a certificate of appointment by the
Secretary of State.
Other information
A Nevada notary public must keep a notary journal. You must have one or more notary seals, but you
can only get one manufactured with your certificate of appointment documentation. It is recommended,
but not required that you keep your seal under lock and key when not in use.
A Nevada notary is permitted to notarize a blank piece of paper, providing the signer explains why
they are requesting such a notarization. In such a situation, it would make sense to make a diagonal
line and a note that this page is intentionally left blank and is to remain blank, otherwise, the
notary could be liable should anything else be written in the page. Most other states will not allow
such a notarization.
