VT Other Information of InterestIn Vermont, the prospective notary must be appointed by the judges of the superior court of the county of their residence. An ex-officio would be exempt from this procedure and only have to apply and take an oath.
Ex-Officio Notaries PublicThis is a term, generally not used in most states which means that you are a member of another profession that automatically can perform the duties of a notary, such as a justice of the peace, clerk of the supreme court, county clerk, district court clerk, family court clerk, town clerk, assistant town clerk, or deputy. An ex-officio notary public must still take the oath of office every term of office and pay a $30 fee just like a regular Vermont notary public. Once you resign or are dismissed from your office, then you are no longer an ex-officio notary.
Term of OfficeThe term of office for a notary expires ten days after the expiration of the term of office of the judges of the superior court. Based on my readings, the term of office of judges would be four years.
