Become an Arizona notary publicResidency requirementsYou must be an Arizona resident to become an Arizona notary public, but you are not required to be a U.S. Citizen. You must claim your Arizona residence as your primary residence on your state and federal tax returns to qualify to become an Arizona notary public. If your primary residence is in Arizona, you would be considered an Arizona resident for the purposes of becoming an Arizona notary.
Arizona notary commission procedures and informationYou must read the Arizona notary public reference manual. You must complete the Arizona notary public application. Please find an application on the Arizona Secretary of State's website. It is also required to purchase a four-year $5,000 notary bond in duplicate form from an insurance agent. The notary bond is purchased in duplicate form so that the notary will have the first original for their records. The other original will be for the Secretary of State's records. A check or money order for $43.00 payable to the Secretary of State must be submitted as well. There is a $25.00 Application fee and an $18.00 notary bond filing fee which total $43.00 for the total filing fees. Please mail the above documents and check or money order to the Secretary of State at the address indicated on the application form. Applicants with felony convictions might be denied a notary commission.
It can take four to six weeks for the entire application and commissioning process to be completed from beginning to end. The process of renewing a commission is the same as getting a new commission. It is optional, but advisable to get E & O insurance. All Arizona notaries must purchase a notary seal and journal. The term of office for Arizona notaries public is four years.
Arizona still allows notaries to perform Acknowledged signatures and Jurats without the signer having identification providing that the signer is personally known to the notary for a sufficient length of time. This ambiguity of how long or well you must know the signer leads to shoddy identification practices in real life and should be discouraged. Additionally, Oaths and Affirmations require identification in Arizona!
