Requirements
You must be at least eighteen years of age. You can be a resident of Maryland, Virginia, or Washington DC, providing that you live or work in Washington DC.

Applications
Applications must be signed within 30 days of submission. The application must be accompanied by a letter from the notary's employer stating that there is a "need for services". Applicants take an oral examination to prove that they possess the required knowledge of the powers, duties, and liabilities of a notary. The notary's signature must be filed in the Office of the Secretary in the District of Columbia. Every notary public must exhibit a sign with the exception of government workers and government service providers. An individual whose application was denied or whose commission was revoked by the board may request the board to reconsider by filing a new application.

Acknowledgments
Notaries in DC may perform Acknowledgments for members of the public. The signer must identify themselves to the notary public. If the notary feels that their identification is not acceptable enough, they may decline to notarize. The notary could lose their commission by doing an Acknowledgment for someone who was not properly identified..

Other Notary Acts
Notaries in DC can perform notary acts such as Jurats, which require a signature in the presence of the notary as well as a sworn Oath. Notaries may take purely oral sworn Oaths and Affirmations. An Affirmation is similar to an Oath except for the fact that the word affirm is used instead of the traditional word "swear" or "sworn". Witnessing and Attesting to signatures are also official notarial acts in Washington DC.

Government Notary
In addition to being a resident notary or a non-resident notary, you can become a government notary if you work for the Federal Government regardless of where you live!

Dual state commission information
If you are a Maryland Notary residing in Maryland, or a Virginia Notary residing in Virginia and wish to become a Washington DC Notary, please contact the Washington DC Notary Division as you may qualify to become a Notary Public there. Also, a Washington DC resident may qualify to become a notary in Maryland or Virginia.
