NC Other Information of Interest
All notary public applicants must complete a mandatory six hour course within three months prior to filing their application. North Carolina has an online notary exam that applicants must pass before becoming commissioned as a notary public.

North Carolina notaries may only perform three acts: Acknowledgments, Jurats, and Verifications (Proofs). A verification or proof is what other states call a proof of execution which involves subscribing witnesses. A subscribing witness is a person who witnesses the principal signer sign a particular document. In a proof, the subscribing witness is the individual who appears before the notary after the principal signer has signed the document. Read about proofs of execution in our glossary which is accessible from our resources page.
