Copy certification by document custodian
Many notaries don't even know what this is. Notaries can only certify a copy of a power of attorney. Yes, you should have a form for that. However, the signer can certify a copy of any other type of document. I strongly don't recommend this for vital records, although its not illegal for the signer to certify it. If a signer certifies a copy of a document, it is just a sworn oath, and is not as credible as if a notary certified it. However, the notary should ideally witness the copying of whatever document is being copied and certified, and should write a note on the notary certificate stating they saw the document being copied. Although witnessing the copying is not an official notary act, its still a good sign when a trustworthy notary supervises and witnesses at a critical moment.
