If your employer purchased your notary commission, they can dictate or have an agreement with you that you notarize only for "business related documents", and they have the right to receive all income received from your notary commission. However, the notary still can serve all of the public whether customer or not, so long as the document is related to their business. The notary is still responsible for the safekeeping of their notary journal and seal ( if their state requires those ). You can ask your employer if they want to pay for you to become a notary public.
