Wyoming and Montana have recipical agreement. Meaning a notary from either state can legally perform notarial duites in the other. Probably because we both are pretty rural.

Notarizing across state lines.

As a general rule, a notary public may not notarize outside of their state. Notaries can notarize out of state documents with out of state certificate wording, so long as the wording is not substantially different from the prescribed wording in their state.

Notaries can apply for a dual commission in a neighboring state. Many states allow dual commissions. Each state has a different rule for who can become a notary in that state. Some require you to be a resident, while others require you to work or have an office in that state. Other states require that you live in a bordering state or in a bordering state in a county that is on the state line. You can contact your state notary division and find out what the exact rules are.

What to do if hired out of state?
Just tell the signer, that you will meet them at a restaurant on your side of the state line. Just as long as both of your feet are within your jurisdiction, its legal to notarize. If you are notarizing on an airplane, make sure the plane has not flown out of your state yet if you start a notarization. I've never heard of that one before, but its a fun scenario.

I just found out that a NH notary perhaps with a special designation has the power to notarize outside of NH if the doc is for NH. Wow!!! That was exciting to learn. In NY, you can live outside of NY and be a NY notary if you have an office or job in NY. Does anyone know any other "eccentric" rules for notarization regarding state lines? Details are posted in the legal section but this is also a good "free for all" type of discussion.
