Be careful--very careful--of what you wish for. Lenders and Title are regulated. SS are not. However, we ARE Independent Contractors and that means each and every one of us has the absolute right to set our own terms. We are also obligated to do some checking on anyone who wants to do business with us to see if they are credit-worthy.

You really can't regulate deadbeats out of existance, but you can decide NOT to work for them...or the slowpayers, lowballers, etc.
That will get rid of them a lot faster than trying to get 'em regulated.

I agree KanDoNotary. I am running into low balling companies, companies who don't pay on time if at all and companies who will dock your fee because you do not follow their rules (which is illegal since we are not their employees but contract workers). I feel like we don't have much recourse to deal with these companies.

I don't know about the signing services, but I understand the lenders and title companies are already supposed to be regulated by the states and feds.

Have Seal, Kan Travel! When you need a document notarized, I cover all of NE Oklahoma from I-35 to I-40 to the state borders. Call: 918-798-8908.

This may be a stupid question, but why haven’t the differing organization, i.e NNA, AA N, 123, Not. Rot. ,etc. pressured the State or Feds to regulate these companies. EVERYONE in the process is licensed, bonded, insured, tested, etc. and are held to a standard for their actions. In the case of a loan package it is even in Federal jurisdiction to a degree… HUD comes to mind here. Other documents would be a state issue. Even if it were as simple as posting a bond and registering with SOS, it could stop a lot of the dead beat companies. Calculate the numbers, taking into account that a percentage of Notaries don’t bother to check for information on companies on any site. We hear of say 20 people being stiffed by a company… there are 50 states, and in CA there about 180,000 Notary Publics… cheezzz I need a bigger calculator.
Any thoughts?
