I carry a digital camera in my notary briefcase and recently bought a refurbished handheld scanner on eBay. It is from Neat Receipts and can scan receipts, single page documents, business cards or ID cards. It gets power from the USB cable connected to a notebook PC. Push one button and it creates a PDF file on the computer. Also approved by the IRS for tax record keeping of receipts.

Can bring the handheld scanner and notebook PC to the signing table if desired and keep a portable all-in-one printer in the car. Scanner easily fits in briefcase or computer carrying case.

New HP all-in-one printers have ID Copy feature. This allows both sides of an ID to be scanned and then printed on one side of a page.

I wish someone would invent a small scanner for ID cards. One that would scan and then save the image and maybe later at the office you could plug it in to your computer to download the image.
But I know that is just wishful thinking. :(( Sigh

I never have used a portable copier but I have used my digital camera a thousand times for taking ID pics. It has been a lifesaver many many times. I just bought one of the magic wands and it is awesome also. I just love it. I keep it in my purse to have with me where ever I go. It takes a much steadier hand than a camera, but after you get the hang of it, it works wonderful.

I bought a lightweight copier a year ago and take with me to signings - it stays in the car until needed - in case the borrower did not make the ID copies I requested during the initial confirmation call. Not everyone has home office equipment, it's not just the elderly that don't have home office equipment. The last five signings I completed, those borrowers did not have a copier and did not bother to take care of getting the copies ahead of time, as asked.

There's also a digital wand device some NSAs use to scan the borrower's ID, then download to their computer/laptop and either emailt o TC (risky) or print the borrower's ID. I actually prefer using the copier....as a courtesy to the client, I can make photocopies of other paperwork needed to return with the loan package so that borrowers don't have to let go of their only original paperwork.
