We all love them - CASH customers for our Mobile Notary Services. No waiting for payment, dunning phone calls - and you have money in your pocket to fill the gas tank! But, for things to flow smoothly you have to keep in mind what to do BEFORE, DURING and AFTER the job.
BEFORE going to the job you of course need good contact info, getting a cell number when you book the job is essential. Also the exact meeting location - apartment number, Starbucks location, if a "2 family" are they upstairs or downstairs, etc. Make sure you have change for a hundred dollar bill, etc. After verifying the "what to do" and the "proper ID" you must BOTH agree on a price. The worst thing you can do is ask for xxx dollars when they have in mind paying two dollars! I always end the initial contact discussion with my fee and asking "is that what you want?". I assume you have the proper supplies with you - forms, stamps, embossers, pens, etc..... I always suggest the client (especially when it's "just one little item") to make a copy and allow me to notarize BOTH (at a stated no extra fee) - it takes but a moment and the clients like getting "2 for 1".
DURING the job the first thing is to establish yourself as a professional Mobile Notary. Prior to asking to see THEIR ID - show yours - your drivers license and notary commission. I mention when giving my business card that the address on the card is that of my drivers license. Once the "identifications stage" is over - and I have their drivers license in hand, it's the right time to fill out a National Notary Association receipt - they look great! Even more so with a custom Name and Address sticker. The very act of handing over a receipt almost always prompts the exchange for cash. You dont have to ask to be paid! On VERY rare occasions, when I have the "feeling" that the client plans to "beat me" - I proceed with embossing (only) the documents in the notary section and then ask for my fee. I will not continue the job till cash in pocket - if they choose to not pay - it's time for me to leave - and they can hunt for another notary who is willing to ignore my embosser!!
AFTER completing the notary work make a show of having the borrower check that they do indeed have their ID. I have had several "please return my drivers license" calls - only to find it fell on the floor and got kicked under the sofa. I make sure to thank the client for their business and take a look around to be sure I returned all items to my notary kit - the one time I forgot to do that cost me a stapler. Lastly double check both your work and THEIRS - did they fill in all blanks? Sign where they should? And date?
In summary it's best to develop a sequence of events - and follow it. Some clients have literally "shoved" documents at me with a "notarize this" demand. Whoa, that's not my sequence. Explaining that the ID check is being done for THEIR protection, from forgery, ID theft, etc. will usually "calm them down" and you get back to your sequence.
One last thought about cash jobs, anyone, in some of the rougher parts of the neighborhood can be a target. I usually carry a walkie talkie and am in contact with the spouse in the car. Talking about the address you just arrived at "kind of reporting in" to dispatch - lets your "client" know that you are "not alone". If it's a REALLY bad environment I wont go into a private dwelling and insist that we meet in a Starbucks, McDonalds, etc. |
