I can not understand for the life of me why certain states have no training for their notary public.

I get a call today from a company that is trying to get one of their clients to return a signed and notarized form to them. It will be sent to Florida. Their client said she had taken the document to 4 different Georgia notaries and they all turned her away telling her that because it had Florida notary wording on it they could not notarize it...I was like what? It seems none of them knew that they could correct the venue and/or attach an acknowledgement....I just can't believe this.

We need formal notary training across the board.

There are also many notaries who don't know the difference between a jurat and an acknowledgement, even in Ca. where we have a harder test and more training!! Even after the last re certification testing I did, there were many who came away from that exam admittedly not knowing what they were doing. What's worse is signing companies and lenders employees who want to get you to do all kinds of illegal things and argue about what you are supposed to do when they don't have a clue. I have had to educate many.

Maybe Notary law needs to be like other laws. A Federal layer of law to create national standards and then some additional local laws. The Federal laws could require notaries to understand basic procedures. I think that might be easier in the long run.
